Rafael Schwidessen – Drums

Rafael, 19 (24.02.1989). Rafael groeide op in een muzikale familie. Zijn Hongaarse moeder, Hanna Devich, is concertpianiste en zijn Duitse vader, Gunther Schwiddessen, speelt viool in een van de meest gewaardeerde orkesten van Duitsland. Tevens was zijn grootvader oprichter en 25 jaar lang violist van het in de jaren '70 wereldberoemde Bartok-strijkkwartet.

Na eerst, in navolging van zijn grootvader en vader, de viool te hebben geprobeerd, stapte Rafael op 9 jarige leeftijd over op het drumstel en richtte hij zich meer op modernere muziekstijlen. Hij volgde drumles bij Timothy van der Holst, waar hij Dusty ook ontmoette.

Tegenwoordig doet Rafael de vooropleiding Jazz-Drums van het Rotterdams Conservatorium en volgt les bij Hans van Oosterhout. Naast zijn passie voor muziek werkt hij als designer voor een Amerikaanse autodesignwebsite.

Naast The Paladins, The Blasters en The Fabulous Thundebirds luistert hij het liefst naar o.a. The Meters, John Scofield en Soulive. Zijn favoriete drummers zijn Manu Katché en Elvin Jones.

Rafael's kit is een Gretsch Catalina Club Mod met vintage Zildjian bekkens.

Rafael, 19 (24.02.1989) grew up in a musical family. His Hungarian mother, Hanna Devich, is a concert pianist and his German father, Gunther Schwidessen, plays violin in one of the most renowned orchestras in Germany. The musical roots go back even further - his grandfather was the founder of the world-famous Bartok string quartet in the 70's, with whom he also played for 25 years as a violinist.

Rafael first followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father and started playing violin. However at the age of 9 he changed to drums and to more modern music styles. He took drum lessons from Timothy van der Holst, where he met Dusty for the first time.

Nowadays, Rafael is studying in the first year for Jazz Drums at the Rotterdam Conservatoire, under the guidance of Hans van Oosterhout. As well as his passion for music, he also works as a designer for an American car design website.

As well as the Paladins, The Blasters and the Fabulous Thurderbirds, he is a keen fan of the Meters, John Scofield and Soulive. His favourite drummers are Manu Katché en Elvin Jones.
